Speaking at TGS, Iwata has revealed even more details regarding the looming Nintendo WiFi Service for Nintendo DS. Iwata said that Nintendo worked hard to make a system that was secure against anonymous attacks and abuses via the WiFi Service, and also said that Nintendo's goal was to have every DS owner try the service at least once.

Iwata confirmed that the service will cost nothing. No monthly fees or anything... just the price you pay for the game and your internet connection. There will be two ways to find people to play against using the service -- the first way would involve using a list of users according to how well they did in the offline game, and the second a friends list. As of now, the service will not support VOIP, or voice over IP, or similar means of voice communication.

So what's this you say, no WiFi connection in your house? Not a problem. On November 11th in Europe, when Mario Kart DS is set to ship to retailers (so you might expect it a little sooner in America, as things usually are that way), an official Nintendo USB WiFi router will also appear on storeshelves for a suggested retail price of 19.99GBP. If you still don't have deep enough pockets, or you're just that lazy, most retail stores will be equipped with WiFi routers, and Nintendo is even striking up deals with leading telecommunication companies for free WiFi hotspots.
