Just today, IGN released some new bits of information on Baten Kaitos 2's storyline. The biggest piece of info is that the game is a prequel to the first title in this "series", taking place 20 years before the beginning of Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean.

The main character in BK2 is Sagi, an elite fighter in the Alfard Empire. Once again, you take on the role of a spirit that guides the young fighter through a quest to unravel strange mysteries taking place in his world. Like in the previous game, you don't control the main character, but a spirit. These "guidance spirits" play a large role in the series, especially since it's believed that two spirits from separate worlds fused to create the Baten Kaitos world.

Since this game takes place in an earlier version of the world we know from the first Baten Kaitos, many familiar faces make an appearance. Some of these old faces include a 14-year-old Gibari, a 25-year-old Geldoblame, a 12-year-old Ladekahn and a 5-year-old Savyna. It hasn't been determined whether these characters play as important of a role that they did in the previous game or not, or if they'll just make "cameo" appearances.

Along with the old, familiar faces, many new characters step into the light in Baten Kaitos 2. Miri, the game's heroine, befriends Sagi early in the game and Giro, a doll that accompanies the party somewhere in the middle of the game (We're not quite sure what they mean by "doll"...perhaps a robot). Sagi is also new to the series, and isn't a younger version of someone we already know.

Many new continents will be featured throughout the game. We're not sure how new places can be found in a prequel taking place in the same world, unless they somehow disappeared between this new game and the previous game. It's also been noted that the battle system will stay fairly the same and won't stray much from that of the original's.

It's been mentioned that Baten Kaitos 2 will launch in Japan sometime in December 2005, and later next year for us in North America. We'll keep you updated with any new info as it breaks.
